B.C. Secondary School Graduation Requirements Richmond secondary schools offer a wide range of courses in academic, technical and business fields at different levels of difficulty. Many International Students who come to Richmond are planning to complete their secondary school education with a view to entering a Canadian university or college. Therefore, students should be aware that there are some specific provincial courses requirements that all secondary students must meet in order to graduate from a BC secondary school. There is a counsellor available at each school to assist International Students in course planning to meet these graduation requirements and the specific requirements for admission into a college or university program of the students choice. Please note that completion of a secondary school diploma will not guarantee acceptance into colleges or universities. Students are advised to check admission requirements with the university or college of their choice. International Students are not eligible to write provincial scholarship examinations. However, the must write the Grade 12 provincial examinations. Admisson requirements Each applicants acceptance into the International Student Program and subsequent placement in a secondary school will be determined by (a) the applicants educational background and present academic standing as indicated on the transcripts, and (b) the availability of space in the International Student Program. Final acceptance into the International Student Program will occur only when this is done. Applicants must obtain a Visiting Student Authorization before leaving their country of residence to attend school in Canada. This can be done by: 1. Submitting to the Canadian High Commission in the country of residence (a) an acceptance letter from the Richmond School Board, and (b) an official receipt of payment of tuition fees, and (c) proof of sufficient funds to maintain themselves for one year, and 2. In most cases, passing a medical examination. It is also the students responsibility to keep the Visiting Student Authorization updated. Student authorizations must be renewed three weeks before the expiry date. When renewing, immigration authorities have the right to contact the school to inquire about the students record of attendance and achievement at school. If attendance or achievement has been poor, the student may be refused renewal. This may result in the students having to leave the country. International Students must attend only the school named on the authorization. Special permission can be arranged for attendance on a fee-paying basis at Summer School programs housed at other Richmond schools. Health and accident Insurance Comprehensive health and accident insurance is mandatory in British Columbia. Every International Student must have this coverage while studying in Vancouver. International students are entitled to medical and hospital benefits through the government Medical Services Plan (MSP). The Richmond School Board will administer payment of provincial Medical Insurance premiums for all students enrolled in the International Student Program. The annual payment is assessed and paid with the tuition fee. Guardianship All students
are required to name a responsible person in Richmond who will take
responsibility for them and will ensure that their accommodation and other
living expenses such as food, clothing and transportation are provided. Parents of applicants who are under 16 years of age should check with the Canadian High Commission in their country of residence for specific guardianship requirements. © 2001 HFConsulting Company |
